Billal Hossain, the General Manager of All Werkz Pte Ltd, a leading glass service provider in Singapore, attests to this.
Starting with only 10 workers in 2005, All Werkz is now one of the leading glass companies in the country. It has served topnotch clients in the private and government sector, putting up architectural glass and metal works in buildings and other constructions. So how did All Werkz, which started with just a handful of employees, catapult to the top and reach sparkling success? In this interview, Billal Hossain relates how he managed his company to achieve a brilliant feat in the glass industry.
The Challenge Of Workforce And Finance In The Glass Service Business
“Our road to success was a jagged one,” Billal Hossain says. “The first years of All Werkz were tough. We only started with 10 workers and the clients were only a few.” The company started without Billal Hossain in the picture. During its startup years, the business was not thriving at all.
After five years of being stagnant, All Werkz hired Billal Hossain. “I saw the problem in working with a small team that was composed of foreigners. If we wanted to serve more clients, we needed more people to propel the business. And so, I talked to my Director and proposed to
hire additional workforce that would be in charge of sales and marketing. My Director approved this, and we hired additional staff, all Singaporeans who are experts in marketing our services to more prospective clients. It all started from there,” he says.
At present, All Werkz employs a total of 54 workers doing design, technical jobs, sales and marketing and administrative tasks. “Our small group five years ago now grew into a bigger family. With a bigger team, we are now able to serve a lot of clients. This year, our projects amount to S$9 million. We are targeting to exceed this next year,” Billal Hossain proudly beams. With a million dollars worth of profit only in a year for All Werkz, one would think that the company does not experience financial challenges. “One of the challenges that we face in this business is cash flow. Some of our clients do not pay us on time. When this happens, our revenue and expense stream gets affected. Our finance, operations and investment activities suffer. We have workers to pay, supplies and materials to purchase and a lot of financial undertakings to cover. The good thing is our company has stable funds to cover all these problems over time. Aside from our funds, we keep a high level of patience with these kinds of clients. For us, relationships in the business are precious and it must be maintained and nurtured.”
“We also experience some technical problems along the way during project constructions and repairs. We know that this is all part of the learning experience. However, we always maintain a high standard of service. We see to it that we give premium service to our clients. This is one of the reasons why All Werkz became a hit in the glass industry. We are known for our excellent offerings,” Billal Hossain shares.
A Look Into The Future: Expanding The Business For More Clients
All Werkz is committed to be the best in the glass industry in Singapore. “We are steadfast in serving our customers. Our goal is to make every customer satisfied. So far, we do not have clients complaining, rather we have contented patrons,” Billal Hossain utters with satisfaction.
In the next five years, All Werkz plans to expand the business to increase their revenues. “We have built a good reputation in the industry and we plan to grow our list of clienteles. So far, we have established unwavering relationships with our customers over the years and this has also
become our strength as a company,” he adds.
Advice To Young Entrepreneurs: Immerse Yourself In The Business
In this interview, Billal Hossain narrates his years of ups and downs in working in Singapore and coming home to Bangladesh to start his own business. “I was only 20 years old when I came to Singapore as an ordinary worker. I only earned a meagre salary. Through the years, I worked for various companies in this country and in every company where I was hired I showed hard work, commitment and dedication.”
“In 2007, I went back to Bangladesh because I wanted to settle in my own country. I started my own business, but it failed because the culture was different there. My years of experience in working for various industries in Singapore were not applicable back home, and so I decided to move back to where my heart is. I came back to my old company and asked by Director to take me back in. He welcomed me back with opened arms, with new responsibilities and new roles. I was given the opportunity to take the lead. From an ordinary worker, I was given the responsibility to take charge of the whole operation of the business. From Project Manager, I was promoted to General Manager. I took the challenge and worked harder.”
“It is important for young entrepreneurs to learn the ropes of the business. If you want to put up your own company, you must immerse yourself into it. You must know your business by heart, even to the smallest details. Do not depend on others to run your company,” Billal
Billal Hossain also encourages young entrepreneurs to be goal-oriented. “Focus on your goals and keep track of your success. In All Werkz, we monitor our accomplishments every quarter. In this way, we can see our weaknesses and strengths. So, every quarter we are doing something better in the company.”
“The principles and values to maintaining success in the business include sincerity to clients, quality service and teamwork.” Billal Hossain says that young businessmen must strive hard to offer the best service, maintain good relationships with clients and encourage teamwork in the company.
“One must also imbibe a positive attitude to achieve success in the business. There is no room for sulking in this business. One must strive for the best in various positive ways.” Asked what drives Billal Hossain to work day in and day out for All Werkz, he replies “when I started in this company, I was driven by the opportunity that my boss gave me. As the leader of this company, I was expected to work hard. Like they say, with great power comes great responsibilities. Therefore, I imbibed a culture of commitment and dedication in my work. I banked on hard work. I had to sacrifice my weekends, holidays and even my birthdays for work.”
“Without hard work, one reaps no rewards.” And this is indeed true for Billal Hossain, who gained a glistening success in the glass service business.
