Amidst the commonplace practices of the “vanity” business, an aesthetics and wellness centre stands out as a refreshing change.
At Beauty Wellness Pte Ltd was established not for the same usual reasons heard from other beauty salons or spas. Founder Ms. Apple Tan desired to veer away from unethical business practices which she had seen becoming prevalent in the industry. Known to insiders like her, these include pushing products which customers don’t really need for the sake of profit. Or getting customers to buy exorbitantly priced packages only to shortchange the service rendered to them the next time they are back.
Together with her sister, Apple founded At Beauty Wellness with the determination to change the industry for the better.
“As a Buddhist myself, I understand the teachings of cause and effect. Clients pay us and therefore we must deliver,” Apple says.
Applying this simple and sincere principle has paved the way for At Beauty Wellness to become one of the most sought-after and successful face, body, and spa centres in the country today.
In this interview, Ms. Apple Tan shares that success naturally multiplies itself when an entrepreneur sincerely seeks to help others first.
Running A Beauty Business With A Mission To Serve
At Beauty Wellness’s longevity in the industry is simply credited to their sincere service to customers. Eight years since its establishment, the spa and wellness centre has three branches in Eunos, Toa Payoh and the Furama Hotel City Centre on Eu Tong Sen St. Apple is hands-on in ensuring that each customer’s welfare is given paramount priority.
The face, body and spa centre offers detoxifying, rejuvenating, whitening, hydrating and body slimming services. It also carries the Babor facial care product line. Apple shares that one of the challenges she encounters in the business are customers comparing her price with products that could be bought cheaper elsewhere. “The price difference is because of the quality. We always want to give the best to the client.”
Helping their customers achieve a long-term goal rather than apply superficial solutions that will only last one day is what Apple desires to do. “One of the clients came to us and did 10 facial treatments. After a few treatments, we realize that he needs more than 10 treatments but he doesn’t have financial ability; I helped him do the rest treatments for free,” she shares.
That said, Apple defines success as being able to truly help others. “I believe if I want to make a lot of money, I will need to help as many people. For me, I do donations here and there. I don’t think success is about driving a fast car, live in the big house etc. I think in my trade, If I can serve my customers, that is success to me.”
Emerging Beautifully From Setbacks
The past eight years of being in the business has been marred with some setbacks. For Apple, these setbacks served as stepping stones to success. One of the setbacks they encountered came from trusting people too easily. To overcome manpower issues, Apple made sure that they hire only those with unimpeachable character and qualifications. They also made sure they reward people well.
For instance, their beauticians have a minimum requirement of 5 years experience. They also provide continuous training for self-improvement. The company also offers the highest remuneration in the industry. “This helps us attract some of the best beauticians we can find and thus, remove the fear of manpower issue,” she shares.
Today, At Beauty Wellness has a team of 19 beauticians. All have substantial experience to identify different kinds of skin conditions and apply the appropriate treatment methods, enabling customers to receive the best care.
The Joys Of Being A Hands-On Entrepreneur
“I can actually make more money if I relax and enjoy myself. However, I choose not to do that because to do that means I need to have a marketing team that plans my business, forecasts my annual earnings etc and ultimately, I end up like those salon chains,” Apple shares.
Instead, the beautician-turned-entrepreneur likes to be in the shop to make sure her customers are well taken care of. “I want my customers to feel the sincerity of the work I do,” Apple shares, and this is why she is excited to jump out of bed every day.
Indeed, Apple Tan has gone far from the days when she was a struggling beautician following orders from superiors to push products to customers even if she knew those products were not the best.
“I think the favourite aspect of being an entrepreneur is to be able to take care of customers and my employees. In my company, I don’t require my staff to push products that are not useful for the customers. This relieves stress for both my customers and my employees,” she
