“At Your Service”
Interview With Miss Sunita, Charisha.org
As a young child, Miss Sunita witnessed how her father worked hard and persevered to support the family. Coming from a humble background, her parents disciplined her to study hard and develop favorable characters that enabled her to land a high paying job in the
Following her father’s example, Miss Sunita succeeded at landing an employment with the Singapore embassy. While she was doing impressively well, it wasn’t long before she realized that if she wanted to create her own destiny, entrepreneurship was the road to take. With her exposure to foreign domestic workers gained while working at the embassy, and the entrepreneurial fire within her setting ablaze, Miss Sunita decided to establish a Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) placement business in 2005. Almost a decade into the entrepreneurial journey, her company, Charisha Employment Agencies, has built success upon principles of trust, respect, and responsibility. Here is her story.
A Business That Thrives Upon Trust
“In the beginning, gaining the trust of our suppliers and clients in our service was not easy,” Miss Sunita shares when asked about one challenge she had to face. Most clients preferred to deal with reputable employment agencies. This put Charisha at a Catch 22 situation: To start with, how can they gain the trust of prospective clients when they had none who trusted them at first? They just had to start somewhere.
To get her business off the ground, Miss Sunita sacrificed a lot of time going out and meeting prospects and faced her fear of failures head on by not giving up. “You will never know how close you are to success the moment you quit,” she said. Her sacrifices soon paid off. With one satisfied client after another, the name Charisha spread like wildfire. With much sacrifice on Miss Sunita’s part, she was able to establish a network of suppliers and clients that thrived upon a relationship of trust.
Today, Charisha has grown to become one of the biggest FDW placement agency in Singapore. It bears the seal of trust from many Singapore authorities, including the Ministry of Manpower, Singapore Polytechnic, and the Singapore Safety Council, among others. Charisha is the Employment Agency to be awarded Singapore Outstanding Enterprise in 2011, and the only Singapore-based employment agency with an official branch in Sri Lanka. Charisha is also accredited with the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA).
After nearly a decade in operation, Charisha currently serves more than 100,000 satisfied clients island-wide, and has highly trained professional FDWs from Sri-Lanka, India, Myanmar, Indonesia, and Philippines. How Relationships Based on Mutual Respect Spells Success
On the other side of the success spectrum is how Miss Sunita sustains long-term relationships with her employees. She has always known that treating others with respect is key. “Treat others as you would have them treat you,” she shares. This has won for her the loyalty of her FDWs who provide professional household services to many Singapore homes.
Getting this far and growing the business this big, there’s still no resting on one’s laurels. Now, it’s about bettering their service every time, and outdoing themselves. The best they can offer can only get better. That was the way to win over competition. That was the way to secure long-term clients. Upon this principle, Charisha is destined for greater success. “My vision for the company in the next five years is to exceed expectations in our service and extend the same level of service excellence to our future overseas businesses,” Ms. Sunita shares.
Advice For Rising Entrepreneurs
For Miss Sunita, the most important character rising entrepreneurs should develop can be summarized in three words: Never give up.
“Those who succeed are those who never give up until they achieve success,” she shares. When asked how she defines success, Miss Sunita is quick to add that success is not a destination but a journey. “Success is measured by the amount of hard work, time and dedication that an individual is willing to put in to achieve it.”
With that as a guiding principle, there can be no limit to where Charisha can go. And for founder, Miss Sunita, it’s going to be another exciting journey towards authoring one’s own fate and destiny.
