Interview with Victoria Chew
Co-founder of DEVO Design Hub Pte Ltd
There can be more accolades to commercial interior design firm, DEVO Design Hub Pte Ltd, than can fit the space. Founded in 2006, DEVO Design Hub is a one-stop turnkey solution provider for workplace interior design. At its helm is co-founder Victoria Chew. Often humbly described herself as a “chance entrepreneur”, it was her partner, Derrick Sng, who invited her to create a unique work culture that is arguably the secret to DEVO Design Hub’s inimitable success.

in this business,” Victoria muses.
By achieving a balance of long-term delighted clients on one hand, and a vibrant, close-knit team on the other hand, Victoria has created a winning formula for entrepreneurial success.
When Victoria could not see herself fitting into the work culture of the company she was employed with in 2006, she did not complain. Instead, she simply “adjusted the sails.” Together with her partner, Derrick, with whom she shares the same values, Victoria decided to start a business that will foster their unique work culture.
With this came the challenge of finding the right mix of people. “When we invite people in, it is two-way. In our office we look for team members who have very basic respect for people and the things we do. We look at their integrity. There are certain soft skills we will look at other than technical skills,” Victoria shares.
Victoria places the highest importance on getting the right team in place. In fact, the biggest fear she has to deal with in the business is not having the right team. “We are a people-driven company. With the wrong people, the business can corrode
into politics or disintegration.”
Currently, DEVO Design Hub is 20-strong team with 25 years combined experience in outfitting interiors for commercial enterprises. All of the team members share the vision for DEVO Design Hub not only as an interior design company but a company that fosters a business’s unique work culture through innovative workspace solutions. That said, DEVO Design Hub has been reflecting the unique work culture of their clients who are unwavering in their pursuit of excellence. Among them are Starwood Hotels and Resorts, Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, iMation, Asian Food Channel (afc), Wells Fargo, Walt Disney Studios, among many others.

The main thing we overcame was and will always be competing with our competitors. We are service-driven company. There is a challenge to constantly improve ourselves.”
A Clear Vision For Success
DEVO Design Hub plans to expand their team in the next five years, to include five more team members and to establish regional offices in Southeast Asia. To sustain the work culture with new team members on board, Victoria plans to DEVOte time to work with the team very closely despite the hectic, fast-paced and time-intensive nature of the construction work. “We work with the team very closely. We understand each other’s role. We train on certain core traits for our work culture. We do have a discussion to iron out everyday issues so it does not result in big issues. We treat each other like family.” With this proven formula, success is achieved every single day. Victoria even surprises you with her definition of success: “Success to me is to be happy. That is the most important. It’s not financial, it’s not affluence. When people are happy
even if they have just enough to get by, that to me is success.”
Victoria closes with her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs. And, true to her selfauthored work place culture, this advice is not something one would come by often: “You need have a passion to be an entrepreneur. You can dream about it, but some people are not made to be an entrepreneur. You have to be very true to yourself. If you want to be an entrepreneur, be prepared for a lot of hard work and a lot of heartaches. Then ask yourself, what can you contribute to make the world better?
Being an entrepreneur, you can make a difference to society and to the industry.”
