Global Brown-Winged Horse Pte Ltd – Ms Chen YiYi, The Tranquil Master of Rangoon Road
On Rangoon Road, off the Little India area of Singapore, sits a nondescript little shop. A shop few would notice or expect to find a Traditional Chinese Geomancy service provider. Or as Owner and Founder of Global Brown-Winged Horse Pte Ltd, Ms Chen YiYi, puts it, what they provide is Traditional Folk Culture Services that includes Feng Shui Geomancy readings, Fortune telling, Divinations and sales of various mascots and items that helps to boost luck or bless dwellings.
Founded in October 2011 with 3 employees, Ms Chen has built up lasting relationships with many of her clients that return repeatedly to seek out her advice and services, she has also built an extensive network of contacts in the industry among fellow practitioners.
Hailing from the Central Plains region of China, Ms Chen grew up in a family steeped in traditional values and cultural traditions which include but are not limited to various forms of folk divination techniques. She was already reading fortunes for her friends and neighbors through poker cards at a tender age.
When she moved to Singapore to provide her children with a better education, she realize that her skills can be used to help the people around her and decided to start a business to provide her services to the public. Thus, Global Brown-Winged Horse Pte Ltd was born.
Starting a business in Singapore, as many will know, is no easy feat. While Ms Chen is full of praise for the efficiency of official bodies she has had to deal with, she wasn’t so enthusiastic about the bigger private organizations she had to work with to get the business off the ground. She faced more than her fair share of landlord problems and ran into quite a few administrative roadblocks along the way, but overcame them through her persistence and almost Zen-like attitude towards problems.
Another obstacle she faced was the general perception towards the industry. Many associate geomancy and fortune telling services with religion and superstitions. Ms Chen goes out of the way to explain to her potential clients that the art of geomancy is a product of ancient Chinese intelligence based on scientific principles. In fact, ancient geomancers are arguably the first land surveyors in the world, and there are some studies today that sheds light on how Geomancy is possibly the first study of magnetic fields and lay lines and how they interact and affects humans.
Ms Chen prides herself on being able to convince clients from different cultural backgrounds and ethnicities about the value she can provide to them through her services. In order to further enhance her services, she offers more than the standard fare of Chinese geomancy readings, Palm readings and face readings. In this ever-competitive world, Ms Chen believes that it is important to keep learning and improving oneself. In her quest to ever-improve herself, she also learnt Tarot card readings and provide it to her clients as well.
As her job is more like a lifestyle for her, Ms Chen does not feel that there was much sacrifice on her part running the business. In fact, she feels that she actually has more freedom to spend quality time with her children on slower periods and is able to take good care of both her family and business at the same time. When probed deeper, the only sacrifice she can think of is the time spent on dealing with issues that are outside of her professional realm, but will affect her business. Even that, she admits, is more an annoyance than a real sacrifice.
Having been in business for 4 years, she does not have any definite plans for expansions or to scale up her business. With the same Zen-like attitude she takes towards facing her problems and obstacles, she just says that she will let nature take its course and go with the flow. The only thing she is working on is learning more about the different types of divination techniques from different cultures and providing them to better serve the customers.
While Ms Chen has been doing her thing since she was a young girl, there was a particular person that inspired her to do more and do better. While she did not reveal the identity of this person, she related the story of how she met this young Geomancy master at a seminar when she was still in her 20s. According to Ms Chen, The master was about 19 years old when they met, and she was greatly impressed by his skills and knowledge. He was able to tell her about her life when they met for the first time and he warned her about an impending accident and asked her
to take the necessary precautions to avert disaster. They got along very well and learnt from each other, they eventually even co-authored a book for beginners in Geomancy and Divination. This experience inspired her to officially start a business and offer her services.
Ms Chen lives with a few principles in life. An avid vegetarian, she believes strongly in the sanctity of life, every life is sacred in her view and they should all be treasured. Not one to mince her words, Ms Chen is also brutally honest when dealing with clients. While most fortune tellers will sugar coat words to deliver bad news, Ms Chen will just tell you what she sees straight in your face. She believes that it is better to give someone the hard truth so they can do something to avert misfortune, rather than speaking in cryptic terms just to appear mystical or deep. A self professed curious person, she also lives by the adages that you grow and you learn, there is no end to learning and picking up new skills to provide more value to the people around you.
When it comes to the definition of Success, it should come as no surprise to readers that Ms Chen feels that financial wealth is no measure of a person’s success. It is the wealth of character that is more telling indicator. How much value a person can add to the people around and how much an individual contributes to society will determine how successful he is. Of course, a family that is well-taken care of and a well-maintained marriage with the right values also determines success in her eyes.
As such, Ms Chen really enjoys what she does. She enjoys being the problem-solver for the multitude of people that seek her advice and help and she loves listening to and learning through the experiences her clients share with her. She also revel in the close relationships she has cultivated over the years with her close clients whom she now counts among close friends.
In conclusion, Ms Chen has the following to offer to any young aspiring entrepreneurs out there. Before you start a business, be very clear about who you are and make sure you have the right mindset, as mindset is what determines destiny. Learn as much as possible from as many sources as possible and never stop learning throughout your life. Also find out about all the possible external factors that might affect your business and be prepared for them, not all problems will come from your professional realm, there are many unexpected roadblocks in the way. Finally, be very aware of your own abilities and resources, as Sun Tzu said ‘Know Thyself Know Thy Enemy, A Thousand Battles A Thousand Victories’.
