Giving The Gift Of A Blazing Future To Young Children
Helios EduCare Pte Ltd
When Jonathan Teo was choosing a name for his new preschool, the word “Helios” came to mind so vividly he could almost see it. Greek mythology told of a sun god named Helios who loved to drive his chariot across the sky every day. In modern lexicon, the word refers to the sun’s corona or inner rays. Helios also means possessing a self-sustaining character.
That said, Helios EduCare Pte Ltd couldn’t have been named more aptly. Under its blazing rays, young minds are given light so they shine before others, illuminating the path to the future. Helios leads young children to take small but steady steps towards becoming self-sustaining and socially responsible individuals.
As a business, Helios EduCare Pte Ltd is also a shining example that nothing is impossible with passion, determination and hard work. What makes Helios successful despite being a relatively new preschool? What business strategies can young entrepreneurs learn from them? This is their story.
The Passion For Education: A Legacy Of Business Integrity And A Brighter Future For Young Children
After many years working with a technology firm, Jonathan had an epiphany that led him to pursue his true passion: education. As it is with most lofty endeavours, Jonathan had a clear vision of what he wanted to do— establish a brand new franchise in early childhood education. How to get it done with scarcely any resource on hand, however, was something that only faith and work could bring
First, Jonathan decided to hire the right set of people. This crucial first step proved to be his biggest challenge as an entrepreneur.
“Manpower was short. Convincing quality teachers to join him and building up the school from ground up was really tough,” Jonathan recalls. But there was no stopping Jonathan and his team from pushing through.
How did he recruit his Child Care Teachers, Assistants and Infant-edu caregivers? By making them part of the family and by sharing the Helios vision with them. He invited individuals who shared his passion to “groom the next generation of leaders.” It is this sense of integrity, of doing something good not just for a child, but also a bit part for our nation, that enjoined the teachers into Helios.
They all felt that they were a part of a noble pursuit to rear confident, disciplined and socially responsible young children who are ready for the next phase of their academic learning and for the next chapters in their life journey.
Jonathan also built his business around the principle of integrity. In the day-to-day running of the preschool, nothing is short-changed when it comes to the quality of materials, the interactions fostered by the teachers amongst the students, and the level of engagement in fun and learning activities. All are geared towards moulding young minds to become lovers of life-long learning.
Thus, Helios has won the confidence of many parents who admire their teaching principle and method. Over the years, the number of students continued to grow, and today, expansion is in sight. “In the next 5 years, we see ourselves opening more outlets, especially in China,” shares Jonathan.
For The Rising Entrepreneurs: Go Beyond Taking Risks
Entrepreneurs take risks when they start their business, and Jonathan was not immune to this. He used to enjoy the security and comfort of a regular monthly pay cheque in his high paying management job. He lost that safety net when he took the risk of starting over again with a business he had no idea whether or not would pay off. “The most common mistake new entrepreneurs make is that they take the risk and stop there.
When the hard times come, as they surely would, you’ve got to go beyond taking the risk and see yourself through,” Jonathan says. Truly, running a successful business is about making it through, and then making it big. Just like nurturing young children, running a business requires full attention and utmost patience. And, just like teaching children, the reward is sure for someone who works hard and selflessly devotes one’s self to the work at hand.
Jonathan and his team at Helios Preschool excitedly greet their students every day like it was the first time. “My passion is to see the kids enjoying themselves in school and to see the business grow day by day. These are two things that make me want to jump out of bed every day,” he says.
Indeed, the story of Helios proves that nothing could be brighter than a life lived pursuing one’s dreams, and that a business built upon integrity is destined to shine.Helios Educare Pte Ltd 157 Sin Ming Road, Amtech Building #02-01
