Mr. Leonard Lee & Shawn Teo: Success Secrets In The Interior Design and Transformation Business
Juz I.D Solutions
For Mr. Leonard Lee and Shawn Teo at Juz I.D Solutions, an empty square space isn’t just a square space: It is a masterpiece waiting to unfold. With their creativity and savvy in the interior design business, you will never recognize the same old kitchen counter or your old bathroom again. Every nook and corner of your house gets a spiffy makeover that lets you live your lifestyle in comfort and flair. Two years after establishing Juz I.D as a full-fledged renovation and interior design company, the duo are reaping the fruits of their hard work and patience today. What could they be doing right to make their business thrive amidst tough market competition? This is their inspiring story.
Going The Extra Mile: Secrets To Staying Ahead Of The Competition
HDB renovation and interior design is a tough niche to be in; many I.D. companies mushroom almost every day. Leonard and Shawn manage to keep the business thriving because of their willingness to go the extra mile when serving their clients. “We help the owners source their furniture. Instead of them going to the shops themselves, we help them buy and select. They get the whole package,” they explain.
This requires patience and long hours of devoted work. “At times when our workers are off, we do it ourselves. We are very hands on. Office hours go beyond 12 hours a day sometimes because we still have to meet suppliers,” the duo share. Leonard and Shawn would go to great extent, if that is what it takes, to win their client’s approval and appreciation. In fact, renovating a space isn’t the ultimate source of their satisfaction in this line of business. They get a huge kick when they see their clients “happy to be home.”
“Receiving a good testimonial from our clients is our definition of success. To see our clients happy with our service and pricing and getting positive feedbacks makes us keep on doing what we are doing,” Leonard and Shawn share. In the next 5 years, the partners envision having their own showroom. Right now, they are carefully building a reputable name, and along with that, are adding new works into their portfolio.
Facing Setbacks: Have The Will To Win
When they were starting out, they did not know the pricing for every single detail involved in a total renovation project. As one can imagine, a renovation work is highly involved and detailoriented. Thus, the margin for error when it comes to pricing is a bit wide, and errors had ripple effects down the line. Apart from this, Leonard and Shawn also did not foresee work extensions. Because of this, they suffered several losses in their previous projects. “We had losses, but we gained experience. Now, we increase our margin to include individual items. We also know the price for these items,” Shawn share.
Always when setbacks come, the partners believe in having the will to win and this belief keeps them going. Among the greatest inspiration they have is their passion for design as seen on magazines and models, and making these designs come alive. “Looking through designs of a home model and trying as much as we can to achieve true designs is what really inspires us,” they share.
Leonard and Shawn jumps out of bed every day excited for new projects and new opportunities to see spaces transformed. “After every completion of renovation there is satisfaction for things we designed for the client. When they are happy, we are happy,” Shawn share.
Advise To New Entrepreneurs: Never Fear
Mr. Leonard Lee and his Shawn Teo agree that the biggest challenge to starting one’s own business is exactly that – getting started. Most young entrepreneurs face the trepidation of starting and just let their brilliant ideas die without ever doing something. “Don’t be afraid to start. And after you have started, never give up. At the start we tried to convince ourselves to carry on. We encountered negative margins, negative customers. In the end we did not feel we failed, all these are just setbacks. Don’t give up when hard things come your way,” the partners share.
Leonard and Shawn live by three principles: Professionalism, Customer Service, and Determination. These are the three principles they apply when dealing with their internal staff as well. “We have three staff on the project side. After we allocate their jobs, we let them work on things guided by these principles. We support them as needed.”
Today, the partners see themselves continuing to be inspired by their clients. They realize that designs are eclectic and always derive from different experiences that blend together overtime. Always empathetic, they are able to reflect their clients’ unique tastes and preferences until the desired living spaces are brought to life.
