Ms. Phyllis Chong and Mr. Wilson Kwek: A Strong Partnership In The Copier Business
KT Solution Pte Ltd
A quick look at the KT Solution’s Facebook page and one feels that this team exudes the aura of success and fun! There are pictures of the company’s incentive trip to Hong Kong, several certificates of recognition in entrepreneurship, team members playing pool, and staff receiving merit awards for achieving top sales. Helmed by a dynamic duo Ms. Phyllis Chong and Mr. Wilson Kwek, KT Solution Pte Ltd has indeed garnered worthy achievements; hard to believe that it has only been in the Copiers industry for merely four years. Here, Phyllis and Wilson reveal their success secrets and principles which are truly worth “copying.”
The Road To Entrepreneurship: A Matter Of Courage
In December 2010, Phyllis and Wilson decided that instead of working for other people, they wanted to start their own business. However, unlike others who just “copied” the idea of being their own boss, they wanted to do business to share their success to others. “For us, success is having time to do what you want. It’s when you have time for family, for community work, or to pursue a hobby that will improve yourself.” Phyllis and Wilson share.
Unlike other young business owners who spend almost 16 hours of work a day when they started, KT Solutions maintain a regular office hours of just 8-10 from day 1. This is quite a courageous step to take, considering that the copiers industry is very competitive. “The big brands like Canon and Xerox already have up to 10 resellers. So you can imagine that we are competing against up to 30 resellers,” Phyllis shares.
How do they manage to keep their business thriving? Having a smart way to sell is the key. “Sometimes through our old friendships and customers, we build our own rapport and gain internal support,” Wilson shares. By being trustworthy and operating their business based on integrity, Phyllis and Wilson became the preferred supplier of big and small companies. They sell from small copiers priced from $6,000, to large scale copiers that cost hundreds of thousands.
In fact, one of the most satisfying moments in their entrepreneurship journey was when they achieved the Top 3 Reseller for Canon all over Singapore in 2013. “It’s the relationship we build with our customers and our staff that makes us thrive despite the tough competition,” they share. KL Solution has a staff of over 20, and their family is still growing. To take care of their staff, management provides incentive trips once a year and offer opportunities for staff involvement in worthy causes. Human development is a priority.
Leading The Way: The Importance Of Innovation To A Thriving Business
Wilson Kwek is keen to see the changing landscape in the copier business. “Some companies prefer to buy, other companies prefer to lease. Then, they change their copiers about every four years. One challenge that may happen is when these companies refuse to change their copiers,” he says.
To overcome this challenge, Wilson turns to innovation. “In the next five years, we see ourselves growing into a solutions provider. We would also venture into offering software solutions,” he says. This will have the potential of expanding to other markets as well. Phyllis, on the other hand, taps government directives which may prove friendly to the business. “We have included helping companies process PIC for copiers. We assist them with documentation required to process this claim. With PIC, we sell copiers, we lease copiers and we can also offer to finance” she says. Because of this, the dynamic duo is prepared to face challenges head on, and cannot see any reason to fear change.
In fact, challenges fuel their excitement to come to work every day. “Having a business is like having a baby. You are excited to see the baby grow and achieve several milestones,” they share.
To The Rising Entrepreneurs: Just Do It!
To young entrepreneurs, Phyllis and Wilson have this advice: “If you have a vision of what you want to do, go ahead and do it!” There may be hardships and challenges, but doing something you love makes you unstoppable. Indeed, these are principles to “copy” and live by. For KT Solution’s Phyllis Chong and Wilson Kwek, life will never have a shortage of problems, and the only way to live is to find solution and do something to make life better– for ones’ self and for others.
