P J Human Resources Pte Ltd
“Human resources are like natural resources; they’re often buried deep. You have to go looking for them; they’re not just lying around on the surface. You have to create the circumstance where they show themselves.” — Sir Ken Robinson, PhD
No other statement captures Miss Sherrie Tsang’s principle and passion better than the one above. As the managing director of Singapore’s highly successful recruitment and staffing companies, Miss Sherrie believes in the transformational power of human resource. With their skills, talents, mindsets and technical know-how, people have the capability to create change and drive businesses towards success.
In fact, one need not look far to see the truth in this. Miss Sherrie’s own company, P J Human Resources Pte Ltd, stands as an example today of what a business can achieve with the right people. PJHR has received the Spirit of Enterprise Award twice in a row – 2012 and 2013 – and once again is nominated to receive the prestigious award this year.
In this interview, Miss Sherrie reveals their secret to success and talks about how her entrepreneurial journey kept her feet on the ground, despite the many accolades PJHR has received ever since she helmed it.
Taking Care Of Human Resource Begins At Home
With her strong educational background and unprecedented leadership success, Miss Sherrie is someone everyone looks up to at work and in the industry. Despite the lofty esteem people give her, working with Miss Sherrie is always a pleasure. She treats staff more as friends rather than subordinates. Care and respect towards employees come naturally for Miss Sherrie. In a larger scale, her care and respect towards employees has led her to give due importance to workplace health and safety. For this, PJHR was recognised as a BizSafe3 company. It also received its ISO 9002 certification in 1999, revised as ISO 9001:2000 for assurance in production, installation, and servicing. Miss Sherrie does not stop there.
Recently she has started an initiative on a paperless working environment in the office. Miss Sherrie is also looking at technologies to hasten the administrative work of recruitment. The outcome of these initiatives can be felt in the way PJHR has been able to secure longterm
contracts with several clients, including the private sector and the government, SMEs as well as MNCs. “A promise is a contract between word and action. If I cannot deliver, then I should not have said it in the first place,” Miss Sherrie shares. For her integrity in serving her clients with their manpower needs, all her clients are highly satisfied. “Client satisfaction is our top priority,” Miss Sherrie said.
Over the years since PJHR was founded in 1992, it has filled thousands of vacancies from top management to rank and file staff. Matching the candidate with the nature of the job, salary, the special skills required, may take a long period of time. There are no short cuts and no guesswork. The discipline to assess candidates for a particular position often results in a good match, and Miss Sherrie’s clients get to hire the right person whose skills and personality perfectly correspond to the requirement in the organisation. 3 Secrets To Championing The Human Resources Business “Being a successful entrepreneur means you have to have real passion. You need continuous improvement and to be equipped with the right skills and attitudes. Pride comes before a fall, therefore, always be humble and keep learning from others,” Miss Sherrie advises.
Her guiding principle has led to PJHR securing long-term contracts. In fact, Miss Sherrie does not stop after a person is recruited and successfully hired. PJHR is also committed to solve problems which may come up during and after the recruitment, providing a total manpower and recruitment solution so that clients can focus on other more pressing matters in their business. When asked to talk about what she considers as her failures, Miss Sherrie could not think of any. To her, there are only lessons learned. A failure only happens when the person fails to learn the lesson. “In order to be successful, one should constantly review their mistake and
learn from it,” she said.
Apart from wearing a positive attitude geared towards success, Miss Sherrie is also an avid fan of innovation. If there is a new technology to make work faster and more effective, she is not one to shy away from this technology. Quite contrary, she is a technology innovator— she would take the risks naturally involved in the early use of technology if this means placing her company in the leading edge against competitors.
Entrepreneurship: A Never Ending Journey
“Entrepreneurship is not just about setting up a business. It’s about understanding the industry, product cycle, and knowing the economy well. It is also important to know your strengths and weaknesses, “Miss Sherrie said. Truly, PJHR has not left the track to success despite challenges coming up every day. Miss Sherrie embraces PJHR fully, and commits to make it grow so that clients can be served even better. With this, PJHR becomes a pillar in the manpower recruitment and placement industry, fuelling businesses with the right manpower complement and helping boost Singapore’s national economy by developing its human resources and providing wonderful opportunities for people to be placed in highly fulfilling careers.
