Skin Miracles Pte Ltd – Ms Wang Yoke Lian, Pint-Size Powerhouse
In the midst of the hustle and bustle of Holland Village, one can find an oasis of peace in a second floor establishment in Skin Miracles Pte Ltd. A unisex personal care and beauty parlor providing Massage, Facial Skincare, Slimming, Mani- and Pedicure services.
Stepping into this nicely decorated establishment transports you immediately from the hectic city life Singaporeans are so used to into an atmosphere of peace and tranquility that is sorely lacking in this busy island nation. With its soothing lights and sound of flowing water, one can’t help but loosen up and feel relaxed here.
The owner and founder, Ms Wang Yoke Lian herself is a personification of peace and tranquility with her soft-spoken nature and demure character. Many might be fooled by her slight stature and soft-spoken style, but she is a tome of knowledge on personal care with years of experience under her belt despite her relative young age of 24.
Ms Wang worked as a Masseuse and Beauty Specialist for a few years before striking out on her own as a home based business for 5 years. During that time, Skin Miracles was founded in 2013 and the client base slowly grew to the point where Ms Wang needed a dedicated location to better serve her customers, and thus the establishment in the middle of Holland Village is born.
When asked about the reason for starting a business in the highly competitive personal care industry, Ms Wang’s reply was surprisingly simple. ‘I like to be able to help my customers relieve their pains and build their confidence through looking better and feeling better.’ She said matter-of factly with a steel in her voice. That statement alone sums up Ms Wang, this is a lady that takes pride in what she does and will go out of her way to make sure each and every one of her clients leave the establishment feeling better and happier about themselves.
Of course, no business is without its challenges and Skin Miracles Pte Ltd is no exception to the rule. In the highly competitive personal care industry, it is a daily challenge just to stay relevant and continue competing with the major brands and franchises. But, Ms Wang is unfazed by the obstacles in her way. She believes that as long as one can provide good service with sincerity, one can definitely carve out a niche for oneself regardless of the competitors.
Another obstacle Ms Wang is facing is the difficulty in finding and retaining talent. Staffing is a problem most local companies face, but it is especially difficult in an industry where the working hours are long and physical labor is involved. Skin Miracles Pte Ltd is currently running with 4- person team with Ms Wang handling most of the harder jobs. She believes in leading by example and her typical day starts at 10.30am and ends around midnight before heading home to continue with the paperwork and other miscellaneous duties. This routine is repeated six days a week and, in some cases, Sundays are not spared due to customer appointments. Ms Wang tries her best to accommodate the times of her clients even if it means having to sacrifice her own personal and family times. That is the dedication she has for her business and the pride she has in her job.
Despite the challenges and obstacles in the way, Ms Wang has a vision of where she sees Skin Miracles Pte Ltd five years down the road. Ms Wang envisions a day when the Skin Miracles brand is synonymous with customized personal care solutions and personalized services for each and every client. She wants to change the sometimes negative public perception of the industry due to errant practitioners to one of trust and positivity. And she intends to do it by doing what she does best, by providing the best customized solution to every single one of her clients, making sure everyone will walk out of the establishment looking better and feeling better about themselves.
Growing up, Ms Wang has always been inspired by her father, a semi-retired business consultant in the electrical industry. While it has always been a dream of hers to start her own business, she had a great mentor and inspiration in the Senior Mr Wang. She was particularly inspired by her father’s strict work ethics, caring nature and filial piety. This is evident in the way she runs Skin Miracles Pte Ltd and the way she treats her clients. One cannot deny the shadow of the Senior Mr Wang in the long hours Ms Wang puts in and the sincere and caring way she goes about devising customized solutions for each client.
Having spent years as a self-employed person and a business owner, Ms Wang has some advice for young aspiring entrepreneurs as well. She is a staunch advocate of the theory that ‘Slow and steady wins the race’.
She urge young people to get some experience in the industry they are interested in by first being an employee and learning as much as possible on the job, only after accumulating enough experience should they try to strike out on their own. In her opinion, the lack of experience and know-how of an industry is the cause of most failures currently, too many people are jumping into business rashly and without proper planning. Apart from starting slow and gaining knowledge, Ms Wang also believes it is important to plan for the unexpected and have a Plan B in place should the need arises.
Everyone has their fears and worries, especially business owners who have the responsibilities of leading a team through the often treacherous route to success. But, Ms Wang has quite a surprising take on the topic. According to her, as long as one has done adequate planning beforehand and has a backup in place, there is no need to worry or fear the unexpected happening. Also, if the clients can feel the sincerity and openness in their dealings with the business, there is no need to worry about bad press or complaints. She believes that if someone has not done all the proper planning beforehand and is unable to provide sincere services for the clients, then one should not be in business in the first place.
As a business owner, Ms Wang has a few principles she lives by. Un-surprisingly, sincerity and honesty is right at the top of the list. If there is anything one can feel from interacting with Ms Wang is that she is 120% sincere in working with you to solve your problems. She is a firm believer in fair and transparent dealings, as such it is her policy to never over-promise on the results, never over-pricing her services and definitely no hidden charges and costs in the billings. Her goal is always to help her clients first and foremost and she believes that if that can be
achieved, business will grow as a result.
One might ask, in an industry as competitive as Personal Care, with the many big and small players vying for the same slice of pie, how is Skin Miracles Pte Ltd different from the others? The answer lies in the individually customized solutions to deal with specific problem areas and issues. Customization and personalization is key to the way Skin Miracles work. Every person is unique and so are their problems, there is no one size fits all solution especially when it comes to personal care. That is the reason Ms Wang will spend her time to find out the cause of your problems and devise a specific solution to solve it for you.
In another refreshing departure from the norm, Skin Miracles does not actively sell treatment packages unless the client enquires about it. Ms Wang believes that she is a solution provider first and foremost and the client’s needs should be the first consideration. She will tailor solutions to suit the client’s needs first instead of trying to sell something the client have no use for just to increase the company’s bottom line.
Ms Wang is already very happy that she has reached this milestone in her business career and considers it halfway to her success. The other half of success in her definition would come when the Skin Miracles Brand becomes synonymous with personal care services, when people will associate with the Skin Miracles brand whenever they think about Facial treatments, Therapeutic Body massages and Mani- and Pedicure services. To reach that goal, Ms Wang is relentless in her pursuit of ever increasing her knowledge and improving the ways she can better serve her clients.
Satisfaction & Sacrifices
While many will cite the freedom of lifestyle as one of the most enjoyable aspects of entrepreneurship, Ms Wang has a different take on it as well. What she enjoys most through the years in the industry is seeing the happy faces of her clients when she is able to help them solve their problems and issues. She takes pride in the fact that her business has the ability to improve client’s lives and build up their confidence through relieving them of their aches and pains or improving their skin conditions. She has also built many new friendships along the way which she treasures and is grateful for.
All these definitely comes at a price, and Ms Wang pays for it with her personal and family time. Being a Business owner is a 24/7 job that requires her to sacrifice the times she could have been going out and enjoying with her friends as others around her age are doing or having a quiet dinner at home with her family. Even her Sundays are not spared as she wants to be able to cater to clients whose only free times are on Sundays when most would be having their family days. This dedication is a rare commodity in this day and age.
