Serene Astrologer and Trading – Master Yow, Wheel of Dharma
Residing on the third floor #03-13 of Fu Lu Shou Complex along Bugis Street and Rochor Road, Serene Astrologer and Trading easily captures one’s attention with its bright red and white signage which symbolizes auspiciousness in Chinese Geomancy. Helmed by the jovial 69 year old Master Yow, Serene Astrologer and Trading specializes in the Wheel Of Dharma, with a comprehensive range of Ancient Chinese Astrology, BaZi Four Pillars Analysis, Life Destiny Analysis, International Geomancy, Names and Auspicious Dates Selection, and other related services.
Serene Astrologer and Trading is officially registered in 1993. Prior to this, Master Yow has been providing his Ancient Chinese Astrology and Geomancy expertise to his clients at his former shops located at the Golden Mile Complex and the oldest Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho (Goddess of Mercy) Temple at the Waterloo Street for more than 5 years, a total of 25 years in the Geomancy trade!
While many similar service providers take delight in marketing themselves by highlighting their own prestigious background and status, high profile clients or big budget projects they have taken on, Master Yow prefers to remain humble and low profile, dedicating himself to serving his throngs of regular customers and referrals that he has built up for more than two decades in the Geomancy trade.
Master Yow’s popularity is evident when we paid a visit to conduct this interview on the Monday afternoon after the Chinese New Year’s weekend. As we walked into his base of operation, we were greeted by an unexpected crowd of customers all queuing outside his office waiting their turn to seek his advice for the forthcoming year.
We were lucky to be able to get 1 hour of his time as a number of the waiting customers had to be turned away due to Master Yow’s jam-packed schedule for the rest of the day. As we settled down to talk, one could not help but notice the piles of paperwork and books related to Astrology and Geomancy knowledge lining the office.
Master Yow’s affinity with the Wheel Of Dharma and the realm of Ancient Chinese Astrology and Geomancy started when he was 18 in Cambodia during the Vietnam War, where he met his Venerable Master, an eighty years old Buddhist High Monk who hailed from China and trained under him for three solid years. The Wheel Of Dharma has its origin with history dated back to the Ming Dynasty in China. It was three years of tough training living in wartime Cambodia under harsh Spartan conditions, surrounded by natural mountainous environment, without any modern day comforts and convenience that Master Yow picked up his very applicable knowledge and skills in the Wheel Of Dharma, Ancient Chinese Astrology and Geomancy. Upon completion of his training, his Master advised him against using his knowledge and skills immediately. Instead, he was told to wait for the right time and opportunity before offering his services to people.
With his late Master’s advice in mind, Master Yow spent more than 20 years to further enhance his knowledge and skills in the Wheel Of Dharma, Ancient Chinese Astrology, BaZi Four Pillars Life Analysis and Geomancy before offering his services as a Professional Geomancer.
When the time is ripe, Master Yow finally embarked on his journey as a Professional Geomancer in Golden Mile Complex. Subsequently Serene Astrologer and Trading relocated to a shop opposite the famous Kwan Im Thong Hood Cho (Goddess of Mercy) Temple at the Waterloo Street for more than 3 years, before settling down in Fu Lu Shou Complex, initially at #B1-25 for 15 years and the present shop front at #03-13 to date.
Fu Lu Shou Complex is well known in Singapore as a hub for all things related to Astrology, Fortune Telling and Geomancy. Facing intense competition from business competitors in the same building, Master Yow paid no heed to them. He just stood firm in his belief and dedicated the best of his ability and knowledge to serve his clients. He has a strong belief and confidence in his own ability, and differentiated himself from others by relying on his services instead of selling mass market Feng Shui products like charms and statues. The statues of deities you see in his shop are actually donated or are gifts from people who have benefited from Master Yow’s advice. Some of the statues have been there since the first day he was in business some 25 years ago!
So how is Master Yow’s service different from others? How is it that he can amass such a strong following over the years?
The first thing that will greet you when you step into his office is a giant wheel known as the Wheel Of Dharma. Master Yow is the ONLY DISCIPLE and the ONLY ONE who uses it for analysis and divination sessions. Back in those days when he was training under his Venerable Master in Cambodia, He had one made from Sheep-Skin Parchment and wood and it had to be operated manually during the analysis and divination sessions. As such, Master Yow spent 6 years setting up the Wheel Of Dharma focusing on ITS accuracy based on the actual Wheel Of Dharma in China.
Apart from the Wheel Of Dharma, Master Yow is also extremely attentive and detailed in his services. While most fortune telling consultations are over in less than 20 minutes, Master Yow can take up to an hour to thoroughly explain to his customers his analysis and divinations. Not one to mince his words, he also does not sugar-coat bad news nor does he try to gain following by selling fear. He believes in being frank and direct with his customers, and offering the best advice possible under the circumstances. That is how he has gained credibility and trust over the years with many of his customers who have now become more like close friends.
The fees Master Yow charges are also affordable and reasonable according to the services needed. However, that does not mean he just goes through the motion and performs template functions. Master Yow takes pride in his profession and feels a great sense of satisfaction in being able to solve his customer’s myriad array of problems through his analysis, insights and readings. Each and every one of his clients has different issues and needs to address, there is no one size fits all solution.
Over the past two decades, Master Yow has been working seven days a week, at least 12 hours a day in his Geomancy trade which he sees more than a mere service to the people who come to him. Most days, he will even continue his work alone late into the night at home analyzing and preparing customers’ birth charts, names, auspicious dates for marriage and Geomancy drawings.
It is therefore obvious that he has scant little time to spend with his family. Asked if he regrets that, the ever jovial Master Yow said that he is happy to be able to be of service and has no time for feelings of regret.
With such a strong following, it would not be surprising if Master Yow is planning expansions or branches. However he is contented to being able to continue to humbly serve his clients in the best of his ability and let nature take its course. What he is looking out for is actually a successor to pass on his knowledge so as to benefit another generation of people after him.
Inspiration and Principles It is no surprise that Master Yow is deeply inspired by his Venerable Master from whom he learnt all his knowledge and skills in Ancient Chinese Astrology and Geomancy. He remembers fondly the days of training in Cambodia.
While the conditions were harsh during the Vietnam War, his Venerable Master was able to make do with the scared resources and taught him everything he needed to know. He admired his Venerable Master’s ability and tenacity to thrive under such Spartan conditions with none of the creature comforts, dedicating his life into the service of others. It is with this same Spirit of Compassion and Offering Good Service to People that Master Yow has carried with him over the decades.
Master Yow works on a principle of openness and transparency, with no hidden agenda. He is direct and frank in his analysis and readings, and does not hype on his abilities. He is a firm believer in telling things as they are. Giving life advice is a serious business to Master Yow and he believes that one should not twist words to suit one’s own agenda, as that will cause bad karma and the ramifications can be very serious.
Offer the right advice and do it in the most sincere and direct way possible. If you can do that, you are helping someone. Making enough money to survive and to continue serving people. There is no need to hard sell superfluous accessories and charms just to boost income. You have nothing to fear and worry about as long as you abide by the code of ethics and principles, as in the oath taken by Master Yow before he is being officially accepted as a disciple to learn from his Venerable Master.
Success and Fears
To Master Yow, he believes that his success is seen in the trust he has cultivated over the decades. The trust his clients have in him and the reputation he has gained due to that trust. When people speak about Master Yow, “trustworthy, frank, helpful, humble” are the most common words one will hear when it comes to solving people’s problems.
It is a reputation he is very proud of and takes great care to maintain, as it comes with 25 years of hard work and dedication to a life of service.
Being a man who analyzes life destiny and does divinations about the future, Master Yow does not have any fears in his life. The one great worry he has is actually in securing a successor to his knowledge. In the current age of Science and Technology, it is not easy to find someone with the aptitude and interest for the esoteric arts. The right mindset and right personality are also very important considerations when seeking a successor! Otherwise, if fallen into the wrong hands, Master Yow’s knowledge could cause more harm than good in society, and that is a chance he is not willing to take. So, the search continues for the right person with the right mindset and right personality.
Finally, when asked if he has any advice for young aspiring entrepreneurs, Master Yow has the following to offer:
– ‘Know what you want, know what is needed, know your own personality,
– Know your strengths and weaknesses.
– Be patient and wait for the right timing and opportunity, overcome your
negative feelings, be positive and offer value to those around you. Have a
good fighting spirit and never be afraid to take on challenges.
– Always be compassionate and humble, to build and maintain a wide network
of friends. Always look to be of service to your fellow man.’
In the Spirit Of Compassion And Offering Good Service To People ,
